Patterns of Place

Patterns of Place

I was invited for Sonic Experiments, an artist-in-residence program at ZKM in Karlsruhe. This gave me the opportunity to dive into spatial sound and spatial composition strategies. During the residency I created a new piece “Patterns of Place” that was part of a concert in the Kubus of ZKM at December 5th 2024. In this Kubus you find a speaker dome with 43 speakers which creates an immersive experience of the sound.

The composition “Patterns of Place” is about feeling a place by the sounds that are around in combination with a more tactile experience or tangible reaction whilst listening to a sounding environment. To achieve this listening experience on the intersection of listening around and within I started with a recording of the architectural structure of ZKM. Using a Géofon by LOM Label, I recorded the people and the resonances of the foyer through the metal construction of the building. I combined this recording with sounds I recorded in the Willem Twee Studios earlier. With a combination of the site specific sounds and the synthesised sounds I started sculpting and recreating place. A sonic architecture that shifts, crawls, pulses and soothes.

A binaural recording of this piece will be published later.
